A blog for you--and for Belinda

Readers:

Apparently, those who have finished Skipping Stones at the Center of the Earth still have questions about what happened to Belinda Poof when she stepped into the Shadow. Nobody on the lighted side of Robert has seen her since. So where is she? What happened in the minutes, hours, days, months, and years since Cal watched her vanish?

In Skipping Stones, I tell you all I know.

Now you know as much as I do.

Or do you know more? Send me your stories, poems, songs, visual art, and videos about Belinda, and I'll post them here for all to see.

  5. Belinda Poof ran into the Shadow and got too far to find her way back on her own. She wailed and cried for days and days until Bartholomew Roberts found her to tell her to “knock-off that racket”. She asked him for his help and he led her back to the orphanage. While walking she asked all sorts of questions. She was scared and didn’t like the silence of the darkness. To get her to keep her mouth shut, Bartholomew finally admitted to her who he was and told her why he was down there.

When they got to the orphanage, just before stepping out of the Shadow, Belinda decided that she didn’t want to go back. She hated it their. It was inhumane how the children were being treated and she absolutely refused to go back. Bartholomew threatened to push her out of the shadow if she didn’t go on her own. What Bartholomew didn’t known was that Belinda was a manipulative person by nature. She told Bartholomew that if he made her go back she would tell everyone that she knew where he was and ensure that they sent out a search party for him.

Bartholomew wanted to be left alone so much that he conceded and resolved not to force her back. But he refused to allow her to follow him around forever. So he agreed to take her out the same way he had sneaked into the center of the earth without being seen. There was a secret entrance that no one but he had found. He took her through the Shadow to his secret entrance and out to Alaska, and left her there to fend for herself.

She was found wandering the surface on her own by an Arctic hunting party. They took her to the nearest police station where she gave a fake name. She lied and told them she was the daughter of a family in Hawaii that had lost her while on a family trip to Alaska. She no longer wanted to be in such a cold environment. She was taken to Hawaii but , of course, her pretend family was never found. She was placed in yet another orphanage there to live the rest of her childhood.
